Flash player Updates on CloudReady Computers

There is a confirmed a bug in the current version of CloudReady (the software on our "converted" Chromebooks) that may prevent Flash player from updating properly on 11th/12th grade laptops. This bug does not seem to affect all computers, but the symptoms are that Middlebury Languages, The Americans online textbook and other sites/tools that rely on Flash Player may not function properly (error message "cannot load plugin.")

If you have difficulty with plugins on these or other websites you can bring your computer to Helpdesk and they will fix it, OR students have permission to perform the following fix themselves:

1) Make sure the Chromebook is updated (up-arrow in the lower right)
2) Open Chrome Settings and click "check for updates" underneath Adobe Flash
3) If the update fails or does not update yet the websites still do not work, apply the fix below

The following steps take you "under the hood" to manually remove Flash, and it will be reinstalled when you reboot. Students have permission to perform this fix themselves, or they can bring the computer to Helpdesk to have the fix installed:

1. Push Ctrl+Alt+T, then type shell and push enter. This opens Terminal.
2. Type cd /usr/share/oem/pepper and push enter (TIP: you can copy this command, but you need to use ctrl+SHIFT+V to paste it into Terminal)
3. Type sudo rm flash_installed, then enter
4. type the password: chrome (you won't see this when you type, hit enter when done)
5. Shut down, then restart. Upon restart, wait for the prompt to install Adobe Flash.
