Clearing Browser Cache

Web browsers save or “cache” parts of web pages (like graphics) or even entire pages so that they will load faster in future. Sometimes it is necessary to clear the cache in order to delete this saved information, particularly if a web page changes "under the hood."

In Chrome:
  • Choose More Tools from the Chrome menu (3 dots, upper right), then Clear browsing data
  • Use the drop-down menu to clear “from the beginning of time
  • UNcheck all boxes except "Cached images and files"
  • Click clear browsing data

"Cookies" refer to saved data (saved usernames and passwords, form data) saved by websites. If clearing cache does not resolve a website issue, check the box for "cookies and other site data" and clear again. WARNING: make sure you know all of your passwords before doing this!

How can I use multiple Google accounts without logging in and out all the time?

Many of us use multiple Google accounts (eg. one for school and one for home, which is recommended in school policies) but it's a hassle to log in and out of them all the time. Here is an easy way to set up and switch smoothly between accounts:

1) Log in to Chrome (not just Drive or gMail) using your CESU account (this is automatic on a Chromebook.) Choose "Link Data." This will become the default/primary account.

2) Go to Drive or gMail, click on your user icon (upper right) and choose "Add Account." There is no need to sign out of your primary account before doing this.

Once both accounts are logged in, you can switch smoothly between them by clicking on your user icon and choosing the other account.

When you navigate to a service that uses Google login, you will choose the correct account from a list.

CAUTION: Once you enable two accounts, make sure your school work is always done with your school account!

Can I print at school from my personal laptop?

The short answer this year is... YES! School printers are now set up to use Google Cloud Print, which will work even when you are connected to the MMU_Guest wireless.
  • You must be signed in to Chrome (not just Drive or gMail) with your CESU Google account.
  • When you print, choose "Change" to change printers.
  • Scroll down to the bottom to find printers set up for Google Cloud Print

Using the Bookmarks Bar

Most people know how to create Bookmarks to save locations on the Internet for future use. Google Chrome, Firefox, and most "modern" browsers also allow you to create bookmark buttons in a "Bookmark Bar" just below the address bar. Your Bookmark Bar should include quick links to your daily "go to" sites like gMail, Drive, and Edu 2.0.

1) In Chrome, make your Bookmarks Bar visible by clicking on the menu (three horizontal lines in the upper right), then pointing to "Bookmarks" and clicking "Show Bookmarks Bar." The keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+B will also toggle this on/off.

2) Once the bar is showing you can add one-click "buttons" by visiting a site you wish to bookmark and clicking the star on the right end of the address bar. (Alternate method: drag the icon to the left of the URL down into the Bookmark Bar.) Using the star method, make sure you are putting the bookmark in the Bookmarks Bar folder. You can also shorten the "Name" that appears in the bar so that it is clearer to you and/or takes up less space. Cool Trick: If you remove the name completely, you will have a small icon only, with no text! To edit the button text later, right-click on the button and choose "Edit."

3) To create your own drop-down lists of bookmarks, right-click an empty spot in the Bookmarks Bar and choose "Add Folder." Give the folder a name and then add bookmarks to that folder to create a list.

For complete control of your Bookmarks (Delete, sort & organize, move bookmarks from Other Bookmarks to Bookmarks Bar, etc.) open the Bookmark Manager from the Chrome menu.

And More: If you are using Chrome, sign in to Chrome (not just your Google Apps account) and your bookmarks, history, add-ons and Chrome Apps will be "synced" and available on any computer!
